From Justice for Charles McNeair: “Charles McNeair was 16 years old when his life stopped.He was sentenced to life in prison in 1979 for second-degree rape and breaking and entering. Today, as a juvenile, his case would be handled by juvenile justice, and even as an adult, the MAXIMUM sentence he would face for the two charges he received would be 15 years.Instead, he has spent the last FORTY THREE years behind bars, and every effort at parole has been met with red tape, frustration, and justice turning a blind eye.Charles has always maintained his innocence and many are convinced that the racially skewed climate allowed the life of a young black man to be thrown away like the day's trash.Regardless of thoughts on guilt or innocence, Charles has long since paid his debt to society - nearly three times over!A growing group of concerned, invested citizens has come together and a clemency petition has been filed with Governor Cooper of NC to free Charles from prison. During his confinement, Charles has worked to better himself, including clawing his way out of illiteracy to not only obtain his GED, but to gain college certifications in horticulture and culinary skills. He is a man of faith and has been a model prisoner. It is beyond time for Charles to COME HOME. We in this community fully support his release - we hope you will join us.
