Liane Berkowitz: Teenage German Hero Who Defied Hitler's Nazi Regime
from World History: True Stories of the 20th Century · host World History
Liane Berkowitz was a teenage German resistance fighter who was executed by the Nazis for defying Adolf Hitler's regime. Born in Berlin in 1923, she came of age as Adolf Hitler dismantled German democracy and transformed the country into a totalitarian police state. Like many young Germans, Liane initially grew up surrounded by propaganda, fear, and repression — but she chose resistance.During the Second World War, Liane became involved in the German underground network later labeled by the Gestapo as the “Red Orchestra.” This loose resistance circle included students, artists, intellectuals, and civil servants who opposed Hitler from within Nazi Germany itself. They documented Nazi crimes, helped persecuted Jews, and passed information to the Allies, including warnings about Operation Barbarossa. Fluent in German and Russian and deeply critical of Nazi ideology, Liane took part in small but dangerous acts of protest. In 1942, she helped distribute anti-Nazi stickers in Berlin, openly defying a regime that punished dissent with death. Soon after, the Gestapo uncovered the Red Orchestra. Liane was arrested while pregnant, interrogated, and charged with high treason.Despite pleas for clemency, Adolf Hitler personally confirmed her death sentence. On 5 August 1943, just two days before her twentieth birthday, Liane Berkowitz was executed by guillotine at Plötzensee Prison. Her fiancé had already been killed, and her infant daughter would die shortly afterward under unclear circumstances. Liane Berkowitz’s story reveals a lesser-known side of the Second World War: German resistance to Nazism and the brutal punishment faced by those who dared to oppose Hitler from within. Today, memorials in Berlin honor her courage and sacrifice, reminding us that even in the darkest times, resistance was possible—and costly. Her life and death remain a powerful testament to moral courage, youth resistance, and the human cost of standing against tyranny. This episode is part of the series The Anti-Fascist Heroes.Watch the full documentary and explore hundreds of historical films at:WorldHistory.tv
