LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE 3
from The Authors Cave · host Tony J Francisco
CHAPTER 3 — School: Lie Academy Tony Delgado had begun to suspect that school was less a place of learning and more a testing ground for his increasingly sophisticated lying skills. It wasn’t that he hated school—he loved recess, art class, and, occasionally, lunch—but the teachers and students seemed determined to expose him at every opportunity. After the “Talent Show Fire Incident,” Tony had earned a reputation that was equal parts legendary and terrifying. The nickname “Pants-on-Fire Tony” traveled faster than the morning announcements, whispered through the halls like a ghostly warning. Morning Arrival Tony entered Lincoln Elementary with cautious optimism. He had donned pants that were, for the first time in a week, entirely nonflammable. He smiled at a few classmates, waving like a small-time celebrity who was aware of his own infamy. Sophia Cruz, who had become an unofficial barometer for Tony’s social credibility, observed him from the playground equipment. Her gaze was sharp and evaluating. “You’re wearing normal pants today,” she said. “Flame-retardant,” Tony corrected. Sophia rolled her eyes. “Of course. You’ve clearly learned your lesson.” Tony grinned. “Lesson learned. Mostly.” The First Lie of the Day During homeroom, Mrs. Whitman, the perpetually suspicious teacher, asked if anyone had completed the weekend assignment: a short essay about a personal hero. Tony’s hand shot up. “Yes!” he said with unearned confidence. He hadn’t written a word. Not a single word. But Tony had learned long ago that confidence could fill in the gaps where honesty failed. Mrs. Whitman raised an eyebrow. “Very well, Tony. Share your hero with the class.” Tony swallowed. “Uh… my hero is… Professor Flamethrower.” A collective gasp traveled through the classroom. “Professor Flamethrower?” Mrs. Whitman asked, suspicious. “Yeah,” Tony continued, improvising like a pro. “He’s a scientist who discovered a way to make flames dance safely… kind of like magic, but sciencey.” Sophia snickered quietly from the back of the room. Several kids whispered to each other, trying to figure out if Tony had finally lost it—or if he was telling the truth. The Lie Escalates By lunch, Tony’s story had evolved. Professor Flamethrower now had a sidekick named Sparkle, a genetically modified cat that could teleport between flames without getting burned. Tony added minor embellishments: the cat had saved a kitten from a burning building, performed physics experiments for the Nobel Committee, and once juggled fireballs on the International Space Station. The lies were working. Kids were fascinated. Sophia looked skeptical but entertained. Tony felt a tiny surge of pride—until he realized he had forgotten one critical detail: how to end the story without getting caught.
