Life Stories with Andy Thomas | David Sheepshanks CBE DL This week on Life Stories, I’m joined by David SheepshanksCBE DL for a fascinating conversation about an extraordinary life in business, football and leadership. David’s story is one of remarkable twists and turns. Growingup expecting to become a farmer, his life changed dramatically at 17 when his parents told him the family farm would not be his to inherit. He travelled to New Zealand, hitchhiked around Australia, returned to London and started again as a motorcycle messenger. That experience of having to find his own way helped shapethe determination, work ethic and sense of purpose that would define so much of what followed. David went on to build a successful career in businessbefore becoming deeply involved in football. From Ipswich Town, where he eventually became chairman, to the Football League, the FA, UEFA and FIFA, his career has taken him to the heart of some of the biggest moments and organisations in the game. He was also a driving force behind the creation of StGeorge’s Park, England’s National Football Centre - a project he spent years researching, developing and championing. In this episode, we explore all of that, but also thestories and experiences behind the achievements. David has recently captured much of his remarkable journeyin his book,Man on a Mission, and we talk about the experiences behind the book and some of the surprising moments that shaped his life. We discuss his relationship with his father, the lessons helearned from tough love, discovering purpose, leadership, lifelong learning and why David has always approached his work as a "man on a mission". And, of course, we spend time talking about Ipswich Town -from David’s memories of watching Bobby Robson’s legendary teams as a youngster, to Wembley, European nights, the Premier League and the friendshipsand relationships that have stayed with him throughout his life. What struck me most during this conversation was David’srelentless energy and determination.
