Liftoff Into Space

from Bohacz & Frenz · host Bohacz & Frenz

This story has a character I created, John (with his last name that no one could spell), lifting off into space with two imaginary friends: Joseph Quest and Linus Van Pelt. The sounds of the monsters they encounter on the planet they visit was inspired by "The Invisible Monster" episode of the TV show "Jonny Quest." As you can hear I really liked making that sound. I also hear some music that I mouthed from "Thunderbirds" and "Star Trek." Our Webcor reel-to-reel tape recorder's erase head was faulty and this allowed me to experiment with overdubbing way before I had ever heard of the concept. I also experimented with speed changes. In addition there's a continuation of the experimental sound making I started with my track “Electronic Tonalities.” I used almost the same method towards the end of this track to produce the sounds in that one. The only difference is the loudness gets low in certain sections. If memory serves I had to lower the record level for some technical reason. These experiments probably damaged our Webcor reel-to-reel tape recorder, the technical quality of our recordings seems to get worse over time. Then again dirty heads could have been the culprit, I didn't know I needed to clean them back then. I could have recorded this any time after September 8, 1966 (first airing of "Star Trek") when I was 8 years old.
