A metà 900 l’Iran era il secondo Paese esportatore di greggio al mondo e possedeva il 95% delle riserve mondiali di gas, ma manteneva redditi pro capite, tassi di alfabetizzazione e mortalità infantile da fondo classifica. Le profonde disuguaglianze sociali e il risentimento per le ingerenze straniere portarono il carismatico Khomeini a denunciare l’allineamento dell’Iran ai canoni occidentali. La protesta fu repressa, e Khomeini, arrestato ed esiliato (prima in Turchia, dal ’63 in Iraq e infine in Francia), divenne un eroe.All’inizio del 1979 arrivò il punto di rottura. In seguito a una crisi economica, milioni di iraniani scesero in piazza e indussero lo scià alla fuga. Così Khomeini, all’epoca esule a Parigi, raggiunse Teheran in aereo: dopo 14 anni di assenza rientrò in patria da trionfatore e in veste di Guida Suprema istituì una Repubblica islamica.
