Lindsay Clancy Trial Day 20 | Final Witness Challenges Her “Command Voice”

Day 20 of the Lindsay Clancy trial brought the Commonwealth's rebuttal case—and nearly five weeks of testimony—close to its conclusion. Forensic psychologist Dr. Kirk Heilbrun returned to the stand and maintained that although Lindsay suffered from significant mental illness, she was criminally responsible when she killed Cora, Dawson and Callan. On cross-examination, however, Heilbrun acknowledged that testing did not indicate Lindsay was lying, exaggerating or malingering during his evaluation.The Commonwealth then called its final witness, forensic psychiatrist Dr. Gregory Saathoff, a University of Virginia professor and senior psychiatrist with the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit. Saathoff gave jurors one of the most detailed accounts yet of what Lindsay says happened inside the house. According to his interviews with her, Lindsay said a male voice began repeatedly commanding her to kill the children and herself shortly after her 5:34 p.m. phone call with Patrick. She described strangling Dawson, Cora and then Callan before the voice abruptly stopped.But Saathoff challenged the credibility of that account. He highlighted inconsistencies in when Lindsay has said the voice began, the unusual claim that the voice appeared suddenly and disappeared immediately after the children were dead, and discrepancies involving other details of that evening. He testified that this pattern was inconsistent with his extensive experience treating people with psychosis.Day 20 therefore left jurors with the fundamental psychiatric dispute of this case: Was Lindsay experiencing a genuine command hallucination during a catastrophic psychotic break—or is the voice an unreliable explanation that emerged after the killings?With the Commonwealth's final expert now on the stand, testimony is almost over and closing arguments are expected next, bringing the jury very close to deciding whether Lindsay Clancy was criminally responsible for the deaths of her three children.
