Lindsay Clancy's Condition Was NOT What They Treated

from Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary · host True Crime Today

Lindsay Clancy is on trial for the murders of her three children in Duxbury, Massachusetts. Her defense concedes she killed them. They argue she was in the grip of postpartum psychosis and could not appreciate the wrongfulness of her actions. The prosecution says her behavior that day proves intent.Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott, author of Night Bird, sits down with Tony Brueski to examine the clinical foundation the entire case rests on. The public treats postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis as the same condition at different severity levels. They are not. Depression is a mood disorder. Psychosis is a break from reality — delusions, disorganized thinking, impaired reality testing, and in some cases voices directing the person to act. The clinical difference between those two diagnoses is the difference between sadness and a psychiatric emergency.Lindsay was reportedly describing command hallucinations to her providers, but the records allegedly reflected intrusive thoughts. That charting distinction carries enormous weight at trial. She was later diagnosed with Bipolar I disorder after the killings — a condition her treating providers had noted as a possibility but never confirmed. Antidepressants given to someone with undiagnosed bipolar disorder are known to trigger the exact psychotic episodes the treatment was supposed to prevent.Shavaun explains where the clinical line falls, what a command hallucination sounds like from the inside, and whether someone in psychosis can appear fully coherent to every person around them.Tony Brueski and psychotherapist Shavaun Scott, author of Night Bird, discuss the Lindsay Clancy case.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
