KEY TAKEAWAYS          My best experiences are these moments of zen that you probably didn’t realise in the moment. You feel energised. For me, it was when I was when no one confined me to a box & I didn’t care about my title. I got to sit in an amazing time of transformation, above all that, figuring out how to drive business forward using algorithms and AI, 5 years before generative AI became a thing. As all good ideas do, the idea for Authentic Identity Masterminds happened serendipitously. You, me & Jess were sitting around discussing the misunderstanding that the more experienced you are in your career, the less guidance you need, you’ve got it all figured out. I was 45 when I had to reinvent myself completely. I felt that if you work hard & pay your dues, you earn it. I’d earned my title, job & income, but in those days I was so into the work I didn’t own my own identity, the one thing that was mine & mine alone. When my favourite role was eliminated, I looked at the clock, trying not to cry & it took less than 3 minutes for my phone, emails, contacts – my whole work identity – to be eliminated. I went to a career coach who asked me how many followers I had on LinkedIn, & I didn’t know. I didn’t go on a wild “connect with me” session, but I started building authentic connections with people who shared my interests. We’re not here to tell you how to be on social media. Who you are is not your title or your role; who you are, what you show up for, your purpose & mission are something deeply intrinsic. I like to use all my experience, curiosity & conceptual ability to solve problems that others can’t at scale. I’m a breaker of the status quo; my purpose is to show people that the impossible is possible. BEST MOMENTS ‘Early on I would work 80 hours, 23 hours a day, & I’m not glamourising that, the body needs rest.’ ‘I’m much more of a spoken person than a written person, which is where I came up with the Insurance Unplugged Podcast.’ ‘Don’t think this can’t happen to you, it can.’ ‘You don’t get to be, discover or emulate who you are & how you show up has to connect to that.’ ABOUT THE GUEST Lisa Wardlaw stands at the forefront of digital innovation in the insurance sector, wielding her expertise to forge new, sustainable revenue streams that bolster competitive advantage. Careers don’t end when roles disappear. They end when identity is outsourced to a title. In this episode of Scouting for Growth, Sabine VanderLinden is joined by Lisa Wardlaw—insurance innovator, digital strategist, and relentless challenger of the status quo—for a deeply human conversation about identity, reinvention, and leadership in an era of constant disruption. Lisa’s career spans insurance, technology, and digital transformation—often ahead of the curve. Long before generative AI became mainstream, she was already working with algorithms and data to reimagine how businesses grow. But this episode isn’t about technology alone. It’s about what happens when the work you love disappears overnight—and you realise your professional identity went with it. Lisa shares a pivotal moment many leaders quietly fear: when her favourite role was eliminated, it took less than three minutes for her access, email, contacts, and digital footprint to vanish. Decades of experience remained—but the identity attached to a job title was gone. That moment became a wake-up call. What followed was reinvention. Not through personal branding “hacks” or performative social media tactics—but by reclaiming something intrinsic: who she is beyond her role. Purpose. Curiosity. Pattern-breaking thinking. The ability to solve problems others can’t—at scale. This shared experience is what led Sabine, Lisa, and Jessica Ewart to co-create the Authentic Identity Masterminds programme. Born serendipitously from candid conversations, the programme challenges a dangerous assumption: that the more senior you become, the less guidance you need. In reality, reinvention often becomes harder with experience—not easier. The mastermind is not about teaching people how to “do” social media. It’s about helping leaders articulate their authentic professional narrative—one that travels with them, regardless of employer, title, or organisational chart. Because in today’s world, your identity must be portable. Lisa is refreshingly honest about the cost of high performance. She reflects on early career years of 80-hour weeks—not to glorify them, but to acknowledge that sustainable success requires rest, reflection, and self-awareness. Energy, not exhaustion, is the signal she now listens to. A powerful theme throughout the episode is this: don’t assume it can’t happen to you. Markets change. Roles disappear. Organisations restructure. What remains is who you are—and whether you’ve invested in that. For listeners, this episode offers: A candid look at identity loss and professional reinvention Insight into why titles are a fragile foundation for long-term careers A reframing of personal branding as purpose-driven storytelling A reminder that authenticity, not polish, builds durable relevance 🎧 If you’re a leader, founder, or professional navigating change—or sensing it coming—this episode is essential listening. Because your role can be taken away. Your identity should never be.
