from BBC Radio Foyle · host BBC Radio Foyle

Imagine being married for more than 50 years - only to discover that the person you love doesn't recognise you anymore. Today on Breakfast, we're hearing from families in the north west with loved ones battling dementia. Frank McLaughlin and his wife Celine were both keen dancers until one day he noticed her steps falter. He now travels from Derry to Cornfields Care Centre in Limavady twice a day to see her. Our reporter Teresa Craig spent time with the couple and their daughter Patricia O'Donnell to find out more about the person behind the disease.
