The members of the Hamilton Flute Band joined up "to a man" when war broke out in 1914, and served as stretcher-bearers at the Somme. Two members of the band - Lance Corporal Joseph Scott, from Moore Street, and Rifleman George Mills, from Pine Street - were killed on the 1st of July. The band's drum - which was used to serve communion at the front - now hangs in the cathedral, and that wartime ceremony will be recreated tomorrow evening.
