Listeriosis breakout

from African Dialogue · host Channel Africa

This week it was reported that a pregnant woman died in Pretoria, South Africa, as a result of listeriosis, a food-borne disease. At that stage the Gauteng Health Ministry had confirmed that there were over five hundred cases that were detected this year, and over thirty deaths recorded in the last eleven months. It is still unclear what the source of listeriosis is and there are still investigations that are underway under the auspices of South Africa’s health department. To help us chat about this, we are joined on the line by:• Aaron Motsoaledi, Honourable Minister of Health • Dr Juno Thomas, the Head of Centre for Enteric Diseases of the National Institute for Communicable Diseases • Ms. Matlou Setati, Executive: Food Safety Initiative, Consumer Goods Council of South Africa.
