Alaa al Aswany, a qualified dentist and Egyptian writer whose works have been translated worldwide, is one of the co-founders of ‘al Kifahi’, a protest movement that played a key role in the overthrow of the Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak in 2011. The failed Egyptian democracy movement led to a military dictatorship led by Egyptian officers. In 2019, Alaa al Aswany was charged with “insulting the state” and fled Egypt.
