Prvá svetová vojna zastihla Slovákov ako súčasť Rakúsko-Uhorska, no na jej konci sme už mali spoločný štát s Čechmi. Napriek pozitívnemu výsledku priniesla prvá svetová vojna v rokoch 1914 až 1918 mnoho hrôz. Množstvo obetí, strach, dôsledky vojny na tých, čo prežili. Vojna poznačila i našu literatúru, mnohí autori museli narukovať, no narozdiel od silnej generácie zahraničných autorov, ktorí sa z traumatických vojenských zážitkov doslova vypísali, u nás podobných diel vzniklo menej.
