She was born in 1935 and survived the Warsaw ghetto as a child in hiding. Her fact-based stories are about children whose Jewish parents were murdered by the Nazis and who were adopted by Polish families to protect them from their persecutors. The adoptive parents only confess their true origins shortly before their death. Hanna Krall's books have been translated into 17 languages.
