钢琴源于西方，钢琴音乐的源头自然也在西方。中国最早的钢琴音乐大概是上世纪初赵元任创作的《花八板与湘江浪》，及后的三、四十年代有贺绿汀的《牧童短笛》、《摇蓝曲》，丁善德的《春之旅》组曲，江文也的钢琴叙事诗《潯阳月夜》等。这一时期的作曲家与作品虽然不多，但水準高，不少作品至今仍长演不衰。
