Live Oak, FL - The Legend of Rock Cop
from Small Town News · host Small Town News
Welcome to Live Oak, FL, A Caring Community! First named Live Oak Station in the early 1860s, the town was named for the tree under which railroad workers rested and ate lunch during the construction of the Pensacola & Georgia Railroad in the area. Live Oak was officially incorporated in 1878 and grew to be the largest inland and 5th largest city overall in Florida due to the proximity of nearby sulphur springs, whose supposed health benefits were thought to cure everything from arthritis to "female problems". It soon lost its status as southern Florida exploded as a vacation area and the medical miracles of sulphur springs were disproved. While no longer a sulphur springs boom town, Live Oak still offers up many enticing recreational opportunities such as the Suwannee River State Park, the Spirit of Suwannee Music Park & Campground, and Wes Skiles Peacock Springs State Park, just to name a few.
