Marriage can turn small frustrations into repeated arguments, pride, and bitterness. Ephesians 5 begins with Christ, who loved the church, gave Himself for her, and is making her holy. His self-giving grace shapes both sides of marriage: wives willingly respect their husbands, while husbands lead through sacrificial love modelled on Christ. Sin still makes love and submission painful. Husbands and wives therefore return to each other with repentance and forgiveness, while Christ assures His cleansed bride of a union that cannot be broken.
