Living Beyond Me - P
from Pastor Jonathan’s Sermons Hosted by jonathan althoff
Connect with me here in text… tell me where you are listening. Burnout has a way of feeling holy when you’ve called it “responsibility” for long enough. We open Matthew 11:28-30 and get painfully honest about the hidden loads we drag around every day: fear, shame, anxiety, bitterness, resentment, grief, people-pleasing, and the constant need to prove ourselves. Then we put one simple question on the table that can change a week fast: “Did Jesus ask me to carry this?” When the answer is no, we learn how to lay it down, and how to lay it down again when it crawls back onto our shoulders. From there, we go deeper than the promise of rest. Jesus doesn’t stop at “I will give you rest” for your tired body and mind. He says, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,” and we explore why that order matters: relationship before responsibility, belonging before participation, rest before work. The surprising turn is that Jesus isn’t handing us another exhausting to-do list. He’s inviting us into a different way of living where the “yoke” is carrying His heart, shaped by compassion, mercy, and love. We also wrestle with the big question: how can Jesus say His burden is light when His life includes the cross? The answer we discover is that love changes what a burden feels like, and love gives faces to needs. A story from Malawi makes it real: a well stops being a project on a list and becomes mothers, children, and changed lives. If you want Christian discipleship that feels like freedom rather than pressure, press play, then subscribe, share this with a friend, and leave a review so more weary people can find real rest.
