Chronos vs. Kairos: How to Live in God's Time

Chronos vs. Kairos is the framework Bruce Novelly uses to unpack one of the Bible's most practical ideas: there are two different Greek words for "time," and understanding the difference changes how you spend every day. Chronos is clock time — repetitive, measurable, the kind we're now able to track down to the nanosecond. Kairos is God's time: rich, meaningful, unrepeatable moments that actually matter. Novelly grounds this in Luke 10, contrasting Mary, who chose to sit with Jesus in a kairos moment, with Martha, who was so buried in chronos busyness — cooking, cleaning, managing the schedule — that she missed the moment in front of her. He uses a simple illustration: imagine a bank account that deposits 86,400 seconds every morning and erases whatever you don't use by night — because that's exactly how time works. From there, he ties kairos time directly to the Sabbath, God's built-in weekly appointment for undistracted time together, and closes with two stories — a boy playing catch with God in the backyard, and a boy offering his father $25 in coins just to buy an hour of his time — that make the case for treating time with God as the most valuable thing we're given. This is a reflective, practical message about noticing and choosing the meaningful moments that busyness so easily crowds out.
