Self-esteem is a good thing if it is based on the right foundation. Based on the wrong foundation, it becomes ugly and dangerous. Those who are in Christ are, the apostle Paul tells us, dearly beloved by God. But God loves us apart from any lovableness or worthiness in us. God's love and acceptance of us come before we do anything good. We are valued by God but in a most humbling way. The humbling fact of God's undeserved love and grace can motivate us to live in a way that pleases him, not SO THAT he will love us but BECAUSE he ALREADY loves us.
