Living Well With Dementia

from Life Happens · host Kim Hegwood

"Dementia is not the end of your life. It's just the beginning of something different." — Peter Berry In this episode of Life Happens with Kim Hegwood, the speaker shares their personal experience of being diagnosed with dementia at the age of 50. The diagnosis triggered changes in their family and business, but they eventually realized that life wasn't over with the disease, just different. The podcast emphasizes the importance of simple actions to simplify the lives of people with dementia and prompt their memory. The speaker is a co-author who has two books about a man living with dementia, which aim to preserve his words for posterity. His good friend Deb Bunt puts his words and his experiences in book form. The podcast also discusses the speaker's coping mechanism of creating a physical representation of dementia in the form of a "dementia monster." Finally, the podcast talks about the impact of dementia on loved ones and the importance of addressing their needs too in caregiving.   How to Contact Peter and Deb   https://www.peter-berry.com/ email is [email protected] Links to books: https://www.peter-berry.com/the-book Twitter @PeterBe1130 @Debbunt Facebook https://www.facebook.com/PeterBerryLivingWithAlzheimers https://www.facebook.com/DebBuntAuthor/ Instagram https://www.instagram.com/peterberry8/ https://www.instagram.com/deb.bunt/ YouTube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMZ2Z51ATdWO83s8VoEvMcw     Bio: Peter Berry- Suffolk-born Peter Berry, 55, was diagnosed at the age of 50 with early-onset Alzheimer’s. Previously the owner of a thriving timber business, Peter was suddenly unable to work or run the business. After this devastating news, Peter became very depressed but, being a ‘glass half full’ personality has battled through this depression and focused on his main passion for cycling. He has used this passion to raise awareness of the condition, particularly in younger people. One of Peter’s favorite mantras is that ‘life isn’t over with dementia, it’s just a little different and he takes this positive approach with him wherever he goes. At the same time, he tries to leave his dementia monster (an ugly, Humpty Dumpty man with a pointy nose and a grumpy expression) on the settee at home. Deb Bunt is a London native who moved to Stockholm five years ago. She met Peter by chance, and they became fast friends, bonding over their love of cycling. Peter shared with Deb his experiences of living with dementia and the challenges it brought. Through his stories, Deb became passionate about spreading awareness and supporting the cause. _____________________________________________________________________ Contact Kim Hegwood- Elder Law Attorney Website: https://yourlegacylegalcare.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourlegacylegalcare/ Facebook –https://www.facebook.com/YourLegacyLegalCare LinkedIn-https://www.linkedin.com/company/yourlegacylegalcare/ YouTube- https://www.youtube.com/@yourlegacylegalcare   Your Legacy Legal Care 1150 Clear Lake City Blvd., Suite 100 Houston, TX 77062 (281) 218-0880
