His teaching and research interests are in the fields of natural history and conservation biology, particularly in the Northern Appalachian Mountains. He is the author or editor of several articles and books, including The Story of Vermont: a natural and cultural history and, most recently, Landscape-scale Conservation Planning. He is a founding member on the board of the Natural History Network and is the editor of the Journal of Natural History Education and Experience.
