Lloyd Bowen, who teaches history at Cardiff University, is a leading authority on Wales in the seventeenth century. His latest book, John Poyer, the Civil Wars in Pembrokeshire and the British Revolutions (University of Wales Press, 2021), opens up some very significant new contexts by identifying a subject who has been almost entirely overlooked. Bowen shows how John Poyer played a critical role in the civil wars, first by defending the cause of parliament in a principality that was dominated by royalist interests, and then by turning to defend the cause of the king when he realised the disappointing realities of parliamentary rule – yet all the while maintaining a consistent ideological position. Bowen’s new book is an outstanding success that promises to revolutionise our understanding of Welsh politics during the mid-seventeenth century crisis. Crawford Gribben is a professor of history at Queen’s University Belfast.
