Local Business Spotlight: PlayAnnapolis

PlayAnnapolis is working to make sure every child in the Annapolis area has the opportunity to participate in sports and recreation, regardless of cost, transportation or circumstance. In this episode of the Local Business Spotlight, Emily Tomasini, co-founder and president of PlayAnnapolis, and Stan Womack, founder of the Annapolis All Stars, discuss the barriers that keep children off the field and why access to organized sports matters far beyond the final score. PlayAnnapolis brings together eighteen local sports programs to raise money for scholarships, connect families with available leagues and advocate for better fields and facilities. The group has also partnered with local schools to introduce children to soccer, basketball, lacrosse and other activities close to home. Scholarship support grew from about $1,900 during its first year to nearly $18,000 the following year, a sign that both the demand and the opportunity are significant. Emily and Stan also talk about the need for coaches, referees, mentors, volunteers and community partners, along with a long-term vision for a dedicated athletic complex in Annapolis.
