Local Government Makes A Difference

In this engaging episode of The Constitutionalist Podcast, host Eric Rollins sits down with Clovis City Councilmember and retired police captain Drew Bessinger to discuss what makes Clovis, California, a standout community. Drew recounts the pivotal May 8, 2020, council decision (4-1 vote) to reopen businesses early against statewide lockdowns – prioritizing local needs, supporting small businesses facing ruin, and rejecting one-size-fits-all mandates from Sacramento. Stories highlight Clovis's high expectations for public safety, excellent schools, community pride, proactive infrastructure (trails, recycled water), and employee empowerment that kept the city thriving during COVID. Drew shares his 40+ years in law enforcement, from military police to Clovis PD captain and multiple chief roles, emphasizing safety, recruitment, and resident-focused governance. Discussion touches on district elections, future plans for older neighborhoods, and why Clovis remains the safest, most desirable spot in the Valley. A powerful reminder of local government's role in mitigating state overreach and preserving freedom.
