Local Groups Unite for a Good Time and a Good Cause

The Returned Peace Corps Volunteers are holding their 45th Freeze for Food, their 5/10K Run/Walk on March 7th. For years they held the event to raise money for food security for local and international groups. 5K/10K Walk & Run March 7, 2026 Vilas Park Shelter 5K begins at noon, 10K begins at 1:00 PM In 2014 Madison residents united behind the leadership of Ken Baun and Efrat Livny to create Open Doors for Refugees to help settle refugees legally coming to Madison to start their lives in the U.S. Open Doors helped refugees overcome challenges in housing, employment, culture, language, transportation and more. Now, since the U.S. government has cut down on assisting refugee arrivals, but Open Doors for Refugees has great capacity for helping, it has found new ways to support immigrants in Madison and new partners. They strive to help newcomers from many backgrounds to find their places and make their lives here. Beginning In 2020 the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers and Open Doors for refugees teamed up to raise funds with the Freeze for Food. In 2025 the event raised $23,000.
