Local News, Gay Voice & Corporate Buzzwords | Slightly Unhinged with Galen Ettlin

Justin is joined by Galen Ettlin for a conversation about local TV news, human-first communication, queer visibility, leadership, karaoke, Pokémon, and Real Housewives energy on an IKEA budget. Galen spent about a decade in TV news, including time here in Portland, before moving into strategic communications. He talks with Justin about what news work actually looks like behind the scenes, from finding stories and shooting footage to editing, posting, and going live, all while trying to make people care in under two minutes. They also talk about gay voice-shaming in the industry, being visibly queer on camera, why storytelling still matters, what leaders get wrong about communication, and why admitting you are wrong might be one of the most underrated leadership skills. Naturally, there are also detours into karaoke, Christina Aguilera, Pokémon, corporate jargon, dirty red wine, Kathy Hilton, WeHo Pride, Beverly Hills, Salt Lake City, and why Galen absolutely needs to come back for a full Real Housewives episode.
