Five local veterans were awarded Quilts of Valor during the Flag Day picnic Saturday, June 14, at Moore Park in Pipestone. Quilts of Valor is a national organization that began in 2003. The group’s founder, Catherine Roberts, had a son deployed in Iraq at the time, and had a nightmare in which she saw a young soldier sitting on his bed in the middle of the night, hunched over in despair due to his war experience.
