Rail workers’ solidarity and power to fight for better conditions is undermined when union bureaucrats act against their members’ interests. The short-term thinking of trade union leaderships is as endemic as it is self-defeating. A divided workforce is far easier to manipulate, so that in the end, the pay, conditions and pensions of the entire workforce can be steadily degraded.
