Lonergan Earns Starting QB Role | Rutgers Scarlet News

Rutgers has named Dylan Lonergan as their starting quarterback for the season opener against UMass, a decision rooted in his consistent performance since joining in January — not just one standout moment. A transfer from Boston College with real starting experience, Lonergan threw for over 2,000 yards and 12 touchdowns last year while completing over 66% of his passes. Coach Schiano and OC Kirk Ciarrocca brought him in specifically for his maturity and game IQ, and he’s quickly mastering the Scarlet Knights’ offense. While younger QB AJ Surace impressed during evaluations, Lonergan’s proven track record gave him the edge — and Surace, a fierce competitor, accepted the role as backup with full professionalism. Schiano’s history of using transfers to strengthen the roster makes this move strategic, aiming to build a solid offensive foundation as Rutgers kicks off the season.
