Long Odds 02: The Helper

A small, underfunded, secret federal program crosses into other universes, mostly blind, to bring home anything that helps. Going back to a world they have already visited works about one time in ten. In this episode, return engineer Femi Adeyemi talks his way onto a blind jump with Team Two out of the Nevada desert, carrying an old chart recorder, a photograph of his grandfather, and a hunch he is afraid to say out loud. They land at dial four, farther out than Femi has ever been, in a world where the sky over the Humboldt River is strangely quiet and the railroad never stopped growing. Somewhere in town, an old engineer has room in his cab. Long Odds is an anthology about crossing blind. Not every crossing goes well.
