Long term crop planning and Lake Diefenbaker irrigation project

Crop rotation plays a key role in sustainable production practices. There are many factors for growers to consider in their short and long-term crop planning. Western Ag professional agrologist Edgar Hammermeister says long-term crop planning is necessary for pest management and soil health. Edgar will discuss the costs and benefits of crop choices based on a number of factors that impact agronomy and ultimately, long term profitability.    The Saskatchewan Government said it will spend $4 billion in new irrigation infrastructure at Lake Diefenbaker, a project that has been in the discussion stage for decades. The province plans to spend $22.5 million for preliminary engineering and initial construction.Once in full operation an additional 500,000 acres will be irrigated which is double the current total.   Saskatchewan Irrigation Projects Association board chair Aaron Gray is excited about the announcement.
