Looking Out Young, Staring Back Old
from stevezeitlin Hosted by stevezeitlin
Ah, the ravages of age. . . . When I am speaking to a much younger person – a student, or a friend of one of my children, or a beautiful girl, I realize that while the young person is cognizant of speaking to a much older person, I perceive the person as my own age. I need to constantly remind myself, “I am actually not their age.” This song was partly inspired by a song written by my son, Benh Zeitlin, for his high school band, Sorry Porky. The title was "Looking Out Brown, Staring back Blue." Looking Out Young, Staring Back Old On a subway late last night I caught your soft eyes shining bright Then to my profound dismay I saw you look, then look away I want to say it’s all foretold I’m looking out young You’re staring back old I’m looking out young, You’re staring back old You know it hurts too much to laugh And I’m far too old to cry I see you turned a blind eye And I know the reason why Time wields its stranglehold I’m looking out young, You’re staring back old I’m looking out young, You’re staring back old BRIDGE I don’t want to be so cynical But once I was invincible Women found me irresistible When did I become invisible However old that I may seem I still have one more dream to dream I’ve had more laughs and cried more tears But there’s a young man standing here With a story still untold I’m looking out young, You’re staring back old Just untie your dark blindfold You’ll be looking out young Not staring back old I’m looking out young, You’re staring back old
