Hello everyone and welcome to Living by the Law, the podcast discussing fictional worlds, and our wondrous and ridiculous they are. My name is Matt and I'm joined by co-host Juden Guy. So this guy who has my work right? I'm infatuated with him.
I in an interesting way okay? Here we are. He always sits. We have a hot desk right?
Anyone can say anyway? Everyone is right. Some people have these spots that usually sits here but like it's the worst. But anyway there's one guy who always sits in the same spot.
He's always there before I ever come in, not that I'm there that early on at the time. He's always been there before he's not always there when I leave. He sits in the same spot in the corner. He wears a high vis shirt in the office which is very unusual.
He wears the same pair of soundproof headphones and plays videos. And I have never in my months working in the current team have ever seen him do anything else. Half of the time I've seen him he's been sleeping while listening to these videos that are still playing. I do know what he does and I'm too scared to.
But I am very envious of this man. Yeah right. I mean I feel like that's it coded behavior though because the dude that's like an IT help desk guy at my work every time I walk past his desk. And his desk is like in a very exposed spot of the star for him.
I'll walk past and he'll just have like a game open or just YouTube open. He's just chilling out and I'm like I'm looking at the amount of IT tickets that are sitting there not done. Oh yeah it's like he's in the corner. He's in the corner but he's not like he's screen opens like one of the walkways.
Like you can walk past him any time. That's why I know what he's doing. It's about doing enough and doing it well enough that you don't get questioned I think. That when you do do work and goes like hey man if you don't you get it done you get it done very quick.
That's the key and putting in the best amount of effort for the best amount of reward. I think that's the perfect key. And speaking of the best amount of effort for the best amount of reward. Dude you're not going into the four inches.
We got somebody to introduce today. I thought you were going to go to the episode four interviews that we had today. That was going to be insane. You're going to start out.
So you listen as well listeners might have noticed we have not heard from the loud and very interruptive guy. Yeah. Whoa guy. Guy would have interrupted by now.
That's all it's yes. I honestly you called open really got me because I felt really cold out because I'm equally incompetent doing work and don't do work. So I'll be caught like on Facebook or checking messages. I'm not saying this doesn't work.
I've been caught out but good to know. We all know teachers are overpaid and don't do enough work. Exactly. Incredibly.
I don't think this guy is not doing enough work. I think he does good work. I don't know what he does. That's what I want to know.
Speaking of people that aren't doing enough Alix. Alex from some friends over at the place called Mountain Gote Gaming. People that are longtime listeners of this podcast and more probably more patreons that have heard us on the Minnesota. It's heard us talk about or me talk about the Lord of the Rings strategy battle game or middle-earth strategy battle game.
I've talked about random things and news from it in the past that Matt and Guy love hearing all about. I know. And this guy Alex is from a YouTube channel that is devoted to two Lord of the Rings and strategy battle game that it is. Some call Alex the best player in Australia.
Some say the world but in the case he's here on our podcast today. Thank you very much for having me. Such high praise from someone that I recall and you don't know. We talked about this but slapped me around the first couple games I played ever in the hobby.
That was a mistake. I remember messing this in the years and you were like I don't even remember you. And that really is going to fight for me that I wanted to. It's just that you took everything from me.
I don't even know who you are. We had a bit of a fun moment but Alex has now gone full Scarlet Witch and become the player to be in Australia. See and I think it's also. I mean, Alex, I beat you the first time I played him.
So he's pretty stupid. It's just I'm just such a bad player. That's it. I'm just thinking to be made by the YouTube and throws the game and you're not aware of it.
Yeah. So Alex, what about you? Do you do the great introduction? Do you do anything else you missed or and what?
What's the other guy? What expert are you? What's the Lord? Well, the America game is a it's the four of us and myself, Tyler, Sean and Jane.
We all play the middle of strategy battle game. We love a lot of the rings we talk about. Taunas we go to strategies, everything about the game we love talking about it. Bring on a heap of guests.
And for me personally, other than Lord the Rings, Love Star Wars is probably the main other focus. Is that much else? A lot of things are kind of encapsulated in my life recently. Well, that's kind of two, three years.
When you read a whole lot, that's going to one. Well, that's a pretty big part of your life. Oh, 100%. And having read the books in a while, but I feel like just vicariously through the game, you just pick stuff up and you just hear the people talking and you talk to some of these people who have been around the game so long, you pick things up, but yeah, Star Wars is definitely the other one for me.
Marvel is just solid overall as well. But even like, you guys told Best Sky years, unfortunately, I'm having a terrible time over in Thailand at the moment, awful, awful time. Terrible. I'm sorry for the guy that has to be over there enjoying like a four-hour spa treatment the other day.
We try to take with us, we can come back, but say anything they're letting back in the country soon. They are. They are. But in any case, I thought that Alex would be a great guest to have on today to help us through as a bit of an expert, not just in the law of Lord the Rings, but the strategy battle game for those that don't know it.
It's like Warhammer Warholies, you've got your plastic figures that you paint up and then you roll dice and you smash them together and you see who wins, right? So Alex has the perfect tactical analysis individual to really lend his vision into what would happen if certain people from Lord of the Rings fought. So I think it's the perfect time to bring back the Lord of the Rings Hunger Games that we... Yeah, that.
Last time, discuss some of the great elven lords of Tolkien's world and what would happen if they all fought in a bloated episode. That's one of my favorites. That's one of my first episode of you guys. Listen to it was just, you guys haven't fun.
Fuck yeah. So you've listened to the episode, you were there, you know the vibe, we're going to talk through a couple of characters and then we're going to walk through how they go into Hunger Games. We're splicing things up a lot of this time. We've been doing a three-parter recently, I'm talking about the different realms of men in Lord of the Rings and this is kind of the third finale of that trilogy.
Yeah, catch up Alex, you missed all the law. Last week of the release of War of the Row Hurom, the New Lord of the Rings movie, we talked about the foundation of the Kingdom of Rohan and today we're diving into bringing some of the Kingdoms of Men's best and bravest into the arena of the hunt games. So that's where we're going to, that's going to be our focus. We're going to put a bunch of men in an arena and see what happens.
Yo, we just seen Gladiator 2 in Arena, this is Gladiator 3. It's going to be much better than that. It's going to be so much better. I just love when you see a bunch of men put them in Arena and see how close they get, you know what I mean?
Just say how they bond. See how they bond, so they get their big sticks when they stick them with each other, you know what I mean? I love that when Aragon sticks, that ought to be his big stick. I love that stick.
You think a Legolas Aragon and Gimli ever had to like cut off a wall? I don't know. I think my, because Aragon Gimli would be like incredibly warm and Legolas would be incredibly cold. You know what I mean?
That's why they're the perfect couple, that's why the perfect couple because they balance each other. And Aragon's in the middle. He probably never ever known, even an out, you know. The perfect ruffle, you know, in my mind.
Yeah, yeah, that actually, the question of the fucking Mary Kil Legolas Aragon and Gimli went way further around the staff room than it should have the other day, I have to say. I'd be surprised if he's not. Let's just say, I never thought I'd hear so many people refer to Gimli as fuckable. It's not about the man's build, it's about the man's character.
Now Legolas is just a selfish lover, that's what I'm saying. So true. You saw him in the helmet, he was horrible. He couldn't even share with the other other, the other dwarf.
The anti-gravity don't help. He's just so light, he's like, he's an even idiot. Oh my god, Legolas is such a bottom. A little teaser bottom.
A little teaser. Yeah, but he tells you he's always a top that wants to do it differently this time, but in reality, he's saying we're going to dive away from that and we're going to go into the first of our characters. We're going to start a little bit, a little bit spicy, and we're going to throw... Now, I'm not going to do that character because the conversation we just heard this is only going to be taken badly, so we're going to go to a different kind of stuff.
No, give it to us. Give it to us, dude. That's okay. The first character, the first man, is the mouth of Sauron.
Oh, baby! That's a man! Give us some Black Nou and Nori into here. Yeah!
That's what we're going to do. I reckon we give, as is welcome to the podcast as a guest, we're going to give Alex the first quote here. Oh my god. And you're going to read out this little quote.
Oh, that isn't all, dear. I nearly prasted it somewhere. I shouldn't have wasted it. Post it straight to the Discord, you know?
Yeah, dude, I've got the Discord, I've got the Zoom recording and that's going to come up in the Zoom recording on over there. Fantastic. I'm so glad. We're going to give this first quote to Alex.
This is just Tolkien's description of the mouth of Sauron himself. Amazing. The writer was roamed all in Black and Black was his lofty helm. Yeah, this was no ring-rate but a living man, the lieutenant of the Tower of Baradour he was, and his name is remembered in no tale.
For he himself had forgotten it and he said, I am the mouth of Sauron. Yes, this is a corrupted fallen man, otherwise known as a Black Noumenorian. We talked about a couple of episodes ago, the numerians that decided to Sauron had it pretty good, and they wanted to follow him rather than sticking the true to the ways of the faithful. Yes.
Um, based exactly, fuck those Monarchists over on the, uh, Clevver, Gondorat. I just think, when the man is Sauron, is he like, okay, does he offer his mouth to Sauron or is he going to give the kisses to Sauron? Which way is it when you say the mouth of Sauron? This is why I said I couldn't do this, guys.
It's just, I just need it. So we, uh, I'll be. I'm gonna just try. I'm gonna give his description and then I'll, I'll go back.
So the mouth of Sauron is one of Sauron's most devoted servants, serving as his emissary, and he is questioner otherwise known as his torturer. He was lieutenant of the Tower of Baradour during the War of the Ring, and as Alex said in our lovely quote, his original name is lost to history. He is, early days are not really known about but we know that he is a renegade of the Black Numenorian race, the men that made dwellings during Sauron's dominion of Middle-earth, and they came to all worship him, but the mouth of Sauron and later entered direct service of the Dark Tower when it rose again during the War of the Ring. The mouths cunning allowed him to be increasingly favoured by the Dark Lord, and he learned much of Sauron's mind.
He was taught a great sorcery, and being cruel than any orc rose to prominence as the lieutenant of the Tower of Baradour, Sauron's capital. Whether big eyes sits if you watch the movies, I guess. As the mouth of Sauron, he was one of the few servants of Mordor who communicated directly with the Dark Lord himself, but the Dark Lord forbid his subject from using the elvish name of the mouth. The mouth could use the name for some, sorry, Sauron forbid his normal servants from using elvish, the mouth of Sauron could invoke elvish names for great power, connected to his magic and sorcery, and possibly to allow him to better communicate with the three peoples.
And that is the mouth of Sauron. We see him in the books and this movie kind of, if you're watching his senteditions, being the individual that rides out from the Black Gate and confronts the host of the men of the west and tells Aragonis a bitch basically. If we're going by the movies, he taunts Aragon and gets his head chopped off. He's maybe not the strongest fighting contestant, but he is also versing Aragon himself.
He literally goes out like a bitch, he doesn't even put him away. No, he was out to discuss terms with the men and he got killed from behind. It was? This is true.
It was a really desirable from. It was pretty sleazy. That seems to be one of the worst bits moving from Aragon there. The first thing I think Aragonis does at King is we all got to go to Mordor to die and I'm going to kill this emissary before I get the chance to do anything.
Do it's a tickle mat. Do it's a fucking diplomat. Man's not there to fight. Man's going to give a single fucking message and you slice his head off.
He's literally an itemist in this gondoran. It's always this cool. I think killing someone who literally can't defend themselves is just a bitch. It's a bitch move.
It's a bitch move. It's a bitch move. I will say, despite being an evil cunning figure, mouth of sorrow. I say it's pretty brave.
He comes out of the black gate all on his own and faces down, not just Aragon, the air of a seal there in a landill. Gandalf's there. Gandalf's basically Jesus, right? This is like someone that is against Christianity going out to confront Jesus if Jesus was holding a big sword.
Let's not put Jesus on the same side of this hobbitfucker, okay? We don't want to take Jesus on that hobbitfucker. No, this is true. Well, maybe we do.
But this guy's pretty great. I don't think he's that brave. I think he's going out like a normal mister. Back in the day, I don't know if you're seeing Troy, but the kings used to write up to each other and have a chat for the battle.
It's like a normal thing. That's true. It's like an honorable thing that you would expect. You would expect.
You would expect me safe. You can surrender if you want to. You know what I mean? Yeah.
But in any case... Aragon was an asshole. He dies. This seems like a great time to introduce one thing that I should have said before, the mouth that I just got distracted with last next talk.
I made the decision to exclude Aragon from this list, as well as his Numenorian brethren, simply for the reason that they're kind of... Crack. They're kind of a bit cracked realistic. Oh, you know we wouldn't have been them when, even if they were...
Yeah, but you know, there's everyone talking about it. They got a bitch. I'll talk about some silly. I'll talk about some silly.
They're like three daggers in the back. He's gonna be like, I trust everyone on my team and they're gonna f***ing stab them immediately. Yeah. Yeah.
So that... Alex has added some magic and sorcery to the list. We're taking notes this time. Oh, you take f*** yeah.
Awesome. That's what it is. What magic and sorcery. One of the examples of medical sorcery he does.
I need some examples. Okay. So it depends on the reputation. No, no, no, no.
There's the books. I will go by the books. He does pitch all the movement under that. Nothing.
He just says he learns sorcery. Sorsory. The best that we can ascertain. I know, Jugly.
Okay. I'm gonna say that, you know. We can say that he probably has similar magical powers to a ring wraith. So the ability to like, transfix someone, compel someone, let's say...
Man, this is just the tabletop game now. The ability to make... Perhaps instil fear in his enemies. Perhaps instil fear in his enemies.
Maybe she would have planned dagger. Oh, you're so cool. Black, black, black, black. Shit.
Black, black, black, black. No! But that is about the closest we get to genuine magic powers. I think if you play like Battle for Middle Earth, one of those old games, I feel like the mouth of Sauron through Fibles at one point.
I don't know. He's always conquest. He's kind of a sword and casting kind of character. I'm pretty sure he's kind of pro the fireball.
They have a black summon in the face. That's kind of sick. But for this we're gonna say it's less of like direct icasp viable and more of like a... He can maybe lure someone in.
He can maybe make someone freeze with fear for a moment. Yeah, more soft magic in that. He's got that silver tongue. He's more like that kind of like, talk his way out of a situation kind of guy.
I think it's more of an intimidation build than a persuasion. Has a bit of a mouth on him if you know what I mean. Yeah. Yeah.
Won't shut up. Exactly. Not a stealth build. The design of the mouth of Sauron and Prichul.
There's like behind the scenes videos of how... They were not designing the character for the extended edition. But I love the helm covering his eyes. The mouth is super in large.
Apparently they made like cracked and dark because he's been speaking like the black speech for so long. So it's kind of corrupting his body as well. Just a super long design character. Yeah, more of a persuasion build.
He's talking the talk. I thought he was just partially doing how many moisturizers. Yeah, no, that makes sense. That is, yes.
That is, yes. So he can speak the black speech. He can speak the black speech. Yeah.
Does that have any buffs? I've seen it like a scare. It scares build though in other movies. It scares...
Yeah. And then Elle Rond gets a bit mad with... It's... I feel like I couldn't drink it as much.
It's like the Elle's like saying slurs. It's like swearing in French to a French person. Yeah. Swearing English though.
What are you fucking saying mate? Yeah. Cool. It's kind of, I guess, the best implication that we see as well, other than it just being a slur, is it's like kind of words of power in a sense, and can maybe be connected to his magic.
So like calling out in the black speech might be how he maybe transphixes someone and gets them to freeze up in place for a moment. That's all kind of connected to his magic and sorcery. Okay. What I'm hearing is we don't have a lot of details, and we're kind of making the shit up.
Okay, got it. It's soft magic, man. So soft. So we're going to dive into someone.
We're going to go back in time for this next one. Yep. Back to the future. We're going to go back to the first age of Middle Earth.
To a character in a series that we have not talked about at all ever in the history of this podcast. So it's a bit of a throwback. Sam Wilson. I don't know.
I'm just trying to make a name. That's the Falcon. Yeah. That's America.
Yeah. Oh, shit. He's here. Why?
We're going to, they can find out. We're going to go to Baron. Baron is B-E-R-E-N. Baron or Baron, I think technically, if I'm specific, but we're Australian English here, so we're just going to say Baron.
Baron. Baron is a man of the first age, and one of the quintessential characters in the writings of Tolkien from the era of the Sumerlian and the first age details, and Key and titular character in the novel, Baron of Luthien, which, go figure, is one of his not released by, I'm sorry, not released by Jarrah Tolkien, but edited and later released by Christopher Tolkien, patched together from bits and pieces that Jarrah Tolkien was working on. This Baron is the first man who kind of starts the cool trend of becoming in love with an immortal elf, and he's the first man to do that. That's not a cool trend.
It's a weird thing. It's weird. And I will mostly for the elf. It's a cool thing.
It's like, it's like, it's weird for the old people, and the elf is too young. It's a weird thing. Yeah, I want to make that clear. Yeah, but also, I imagine Christopher Tolkien getting together the old books and what he can piece together a story.
It's kind of like how we try and piece together the Epic of the Kilgumish today, and every time we find a new part, like, oh my god, it's like, Chris is like going through all like, all the children's finds a new one. It's like, fuck yeah, they're gonna love this. So, yes, Baron is from one of the great houses that would go on to side with the elves and the War of Wrath that we talked about a little bit two episodes ago. There was like the groups of men, and there were the ones that fought the elves, and they go on to become new Minorians, etc.
So, he's kind of the pre-cursor, the people that he comes from, rather, are the pre-cursor to the new Minorians. One that didn't get squished with her. The ones, no, well, some of his descendants would have been squished with the island, but that's fine. This is before the islands, I think.
This is like, before the islands even been created. Oh, this is when they were fighting against Morgoth. Yeah, yeah, there we go. He's got it.
He's got it. And he, as I said, he's the first man to fall in love with an elf that's written about, at least, the elf made in a Luthien. Baron went to Luthien's father, Thingal, who was one of the lines kept to the line of Kings of the Nolor. And Baron asked Thingal for Luthien's hand in marriage, and Thingal laughed him out of the room, and laughed at him some more, and got his whole court to laugh at him, and then told him in complete jest, the only way he could possibly marry Luthien was if he could bring back one of the stolen Silmarilles from Morgoth's crown itself.
The Silmarilles being jewels we taught briefly about in the Overnhunger games, jewels of great power that Morgoth steals from the elves and puts into his own crown to give himself power. We'll do another episode on them, but we need to know his super cool precious gem that's in a crown of the Dark God. Got it. They're like, they're like a guffins of light, right?
The guffins of light, that's, yeah, kind of elemental light, kind of. That's not important. The main thing is, it's a super precious gem that's been stolen by the Dark God himself, Morgoth. And this elven king goes, yeah, all right, mate, you can marry my daughter.
If you manage to steal the gem from Satan's crown, basically. You're a Tina, too. Yeah. Oh, come on.
He's getting his own. Luminous orb. Gotta get his luminous orb. He's gonna get the Satanans.
You're gonna steal Lord Voldemort's wand. Yeah. And Baron goes, and he's joined by Luthien, alongside a couple of other elves, and an elf named Finrod, who is Galatriel's brother, fun fact. Oh, yeah.
And the three of them successfully evade Saron himself, who was disguised as a big wolf, and one of the lieutenants of Morgoth at this time. And unfortunately, through this, who was disguised as a big wolf? Saron. He does that, right?
He does that. Okay. Is he okay? Is he okay?
You know, like, early old testament, when people just do things, and you'd just be like, yeah, cool. I guess that happened. That's literally the first day. He's like, salad is a big wolf, I guess.
Well, he's just messing around. He's just messing around. He's just making a very good time. Like, because he could.
Because it was a stronger form than a squishy elf body, I guess. I guess? Yeah, like a whole sword dragon is stronger than a wolf, so why don't you be a dragon? Well, the dragon's too big, man, obviously.
Well, you're talking me too. I have one question. You haven't mentioned the doggar. Wait, wait, I can't.
I wasn't gonna go for Luthien. Because there's, there is a dog, there is Finrod, there is Baron Luthien. There is also about 10 other elves from Finrod's capital city, Nagaron to go with them. I'll do a separate episode of Baron Luthien at some point.
The main thing is, Baron Luthien end up being the only two to escape alongside the dog, Finrod dying to Sauron in their, in their escape of Morgoth's palace. But they were successful. As my legels are fair. Right.
Yeah, that's, yeah, if you watch Rings of Power, that's why Galadriel so say, because they've rather got killed by Sauron. One of the things that Rings of Power does get right, kind of, Baron does however succeed in stealing one of the three Sumerels from Morgoth's crown. So Galadriel's brother died because this guy was a sib. Basically.
Wow, honestly, you know what? That's a good friend. That's a good friend. That's called wing manning.
You've got to turn it on. That's a wing man. It is a little more complicated Finrod like Ozilife, that too, Baron's family from like a couple generations ago. Who does it?
So it's kind of also funny. Yeah, well, that's pretty funny to imagine Finrod being his ancient elf Baron coming up and going. I've come to call upon your oath to my family. Of course, what is it?
Can you help me like, simp for this? Yeah, imagine you're fucking blood elf that's going back two generations to get, I want to get a girl. You know what I mean? It's what we talking about.
We wing manning now, I want you to break into fucking, Satan's most precious stuff. Satan's most precious thing he has. What? But it gets better.
So as Baron of Luthien, continue their escape. A great wolf is sent after them. Not Sauron, just another wolf. Don't worry about it.
So good, great wolf. And Sauron, Sauron, Baron in the hopes to protect himself and Luthien holds up the Silmaril, hoping that it's light to all defend them. But the wolf bit off the hand. You fucking idiot.
You fucking idiot. They then managed to escape with Luthien like staunching his wound of his missing hand. And Baron Luthien eventually went back to Thingol, effectively empty handed. But he tells Thingol he was some poison.
Empty handed is always the one. Yep. He actually gets named in a demeaning wave. I think I'll bear in the empty handed for a while for the first stage after this.
But he shows up to Thingol. And he goes, actually, actually Thingol, you're incorrect. I was successful in taking the jewel. And then asked where it is.
Baron says, well, it is in my hand. The hand just happens to be in the wolf's belly. So pretty chad move. Pretty chad move.
But eventually, Thingol does come to respect him for the quest. And actually acknowledges the fact that, as shame as it might be, the quest went the way it did. He respects the fact that he was successful in sneaking in and taking this jewel. And that he's clearly more mighty than a simple man.
And eventually, Baron and Luthien do end up the Troat. There were bits of people complicated on that. But a super simple fight for the other ways you could prove it. Also, I can't believe they got through all that and they died to a simple wolf.
Hey, man, don't worry about it. But the cute thing I'll throw on here before we move on to another character from Baron Radha. Well, wrap up Baron, I guess. Maybe a bit of a power creep for him.
This is the singular, one of the two characters that Tolkien himself most connected to and most hadn't affinity to, to the point that if you go to Tolkien's grave itself, it refers to him as Baron and his wife as Luthien on their grave. It's a bit of a power creep. I think that's an L on Tolkien's side. You're not even just the romantic bits called, but it's going, ah, I'm King Arthur.
And I'm the best. He's not even King Arthur. I made up. You know what I mean?
He's actually really cool. It's a little bit. But OK, I've been having really good sneaking skills. Did he even fight anything?
Do we have any achievements? A big boulder he lifted? No. He lost a wolf.
He does. He fights well. It's like a big wolf. It's not just a wolf.
What does he fight? He fights a number of orcs breaking into England. I can stand for a number of orcs fighting England. Yeah, but Sam's a Chad man.
I know. Don't question Sam. Sam has a fright. I know.
You understand? But to simplify, I think the best thing we can attribute to Baron is that he is very sneaky and could be very good in those instances, but kind of has a bit of a weakness in that he might be prone to simping for people, depending on the circumstance. That is the notes we've taken. Fantastic.
I'm going to keep this ticking. The next character, Matt, do you want to go old or young? Give me young. OK.
I just think we do. OK. OK. Just because I don't want to fucking 3000 year old man, that's what I get in order.
I get older. I get like a guy who's about like about to dust. I don't want that. And Matt, you're going to give us this quote.
Give me a minute. Give us a do I have to do. Well, then I got to serve the recording if I open it in soon. That's a fair point.
But wait messenger then interrupt your OBS because it'll come off on my desk. No, I have it on my separate session this time. I have it all prepared. Dude, I'll tell you down.
Because that was a great time Alex. I'm out to get this quote ready. He gives the Chad voice when you're ready. You'll never see it.
Don't worry. You'll never see it. I'm a voice. I was.
Why not? Sorry. I didn't get stuck in the second one. I didn't get stuck in the second one.
I was just interested. I just mess up everywhere. Just to see what dude. Do not purpose.
Why should we not think that the great ring has come into our hands to serve us in our very hour of need? We'll do it the free lords of free of the free. May surely defeat the enemy. OK.
You don't need the second free. The free lords of the free. The free lords of the free. You don't mean?
This character, any guesses who this character is out from that? Boromir of Gondor. Yes, it is Boromir of Gondor. I was going to guess that too.
Boromir has no king and Gondor needs no king. Say it with me, Alex. I reject that, but Aragon. Sorry.
Aragon's too hot. I'm a Gondor, Sam. Boromir is the son of the last steward of Gondor, Dennathor. Dennathor is another one of those characters that's a bit too Chad to do in this episode.
Unfortunately, he'd be a bit too unfair. But Boromir was above all else exceedingly valiant and steadfast and was held in greater steam by both the fighting men. Not just Gondor, but Rohan as well. One thing that gets touched on in the books, I'm pretty sure it's from the books because certainly not the movies, that A.M.
is one of the, to simplify, I guess, one of the princes of the other kingdom of Rohan. He is aware of Boromir and knows him as a very valiant and powerful fighter when the characters of the book go through Rohan. Boromir participates in the very first battle of the War of the Ring. Sarwan's a salt-bonnest gileth.
This is one of the first times we get to see his battle prowess. Probably, realistically, the only time we really see his battle prowess. It's not just like small skirmishes. He defends the eastern shore of the city of the gileth.
We talked about a gileth back in our realms of men episodes ago now. The old capital of Gondor where Anarion and Isildor made their capital before splitting out into their own cities. It's on two sides of the Great River. Boromir defended the eastern shores to the very last man with his brother Farimir.
In this defense, they destroyed each of the bridges, finally destroying the last bridge, connecting the eastern halves of the city to stop Sarwan's massive hordes just rolling right the way through into western gileth. They make everything count, and it is literally four people that survive at the end of this battle. Boromir, his brother Farimir, and two other random soldiers, and they survive after destroying the last bridge by jumping into the water and swimming across. There's a lot more people celebrating the movie that's all about.
The movie makes it look a lot more horrible. They successfully retreated. The movie makes it seem like a great victory. It's just a lot nicer when you see them have a victory.
Yeah. After this, Boromir has a great dream telling him to seek for the sword that was broken and in a large dress it dwells. There's much more to that home. We won't get to that.
He sets out, of course, to Rivendell to find a sealed ors bane, the one ring, and to participate in the Council of Elrond. A little bit different in the movies where we see that Dinothor slash Boromir, here word of it, I think it's meant to be implied that it's heard through the Palantir of Dinothors that the Rivendell's found in Boromir goes off to investigate. Whereas in the books it's much more Boromir having a premonition of Dream of sorts. But his brother also gets along the way.
They just get dreams in the tells and we go places. Men of Boromir's descent do. We'll get to that. There's a lot of we'll get to that in talking about if you didn't know that already.
What are they tugging in their fucking dreams? Their dragon visions, yeah, the dragon dreams. So this journey all in all takes 110 days and along the way he loses his horse and is forced to travel miles upon miles on foot. I think he loses his horse around a river which is a bit awkward for him.
Find another one. What are you doing? It's clearly a boardwalk. He's two chat.
And then he goes to the Council of Elrond. So this is just a bit of an example of how Chad Boromir really is. I think he goes into the Council of Elrond, this place that is like an ancient mysterious place that he even struggles to find because it's such a hidden valley and he nearly gives up on finding it and eventually finds the hidden entrance, walks into this Elrond Council, walks up to all these dwarves and elves and rangers and all these special folks and wizards, sits down and basically goes, you should give me the ring and I'm going to take it back to Gondorbitches. Face, honestly.
What a guy. If that's not based, I don't know what it is. You could use it against Sauron. Come on.
We could. He ends up going on the journey with Fellowship of the Ring and you fight alongside Aragorn in Moria where his most chad moment from all of the books happens. The Balrog of Morgoth, a greater demon-like creature that we see fight the Fellowship and eventually spell the end of Gandoth the Grey. It was a fine episode of spoiler warning.
And Boromir, when the Balrog first appears, Boromir steps forward, blows the horn of Gondor, so loud and proud that the Balrog stops and he freezes the Balrog for a moment. That's my boy. That's his hand. It is his hand.
Gondorbit has no hand. Gondorbit needs no hand. You're right. Don't go right here.
He needs a kick. Yeah. What was that about? Goats?
We've got out. The mountain goats. The final act of his life, unfortunately, is when he fights completely alone, unarmored, with nothing but a sword and shield depending on which version you follow. A fight is alone against hordes of Orakai defending two poor hobbits in the open where he takes down about 30 plus orcs of Orakai, all on his own, completely surrounded before finally being overwhelmed by one of the Orakai.
The Orakai that kills him being a contentious point depending on which version you go off books or movies, but that's okay. Basically, Boromir is a fucking Chad and he does have a little out to Trump card as well. He, through his mother's side and through his mother's side, actually, does have distant blood ties back to the men of Nubinal. The line of stewards technically speaking coming from a man who was a younger brother of one of the true kings of Gondor way back when and his mother also having some Nubinal blood through her relations, which we'll get to in one of the next characters.
Would it technically be one of the people you saw having Nubinal blood? Yes, but Boromir is not as diluted as the average person. It's pure enough that that's the reason why him and Faramir have their visions. It's glad that purity of blood is a thing where it really evolved.
Hey, listen, man. All I'm saying is every time someone tried to marry out of the family, there was a huge rebellion and no one liked it. I was like, there was. I was like, what the fuck are you talking about?
Everyone's fucking right, so it's bad. Yeah, everything else is. You're so right Alex. That's Boromir.
He is a Chad. He is trained to be a bit weak-willed though as he does succumb to the ring at one point and we'll get to it immediately. We're going to keep ticking because I'm conscious of time. The next one we'll go is a bit of a jumpback in time from Boromir.
I'll chuck this one in the messenger chat again. If Alex, you would like to give us this next court. Give him some voice. Give us, I think you'll know immediately which character this is.
You can give us a... Orange. Sorry, this guy's just like... Arrow, black arrow.
I saved you to the last. You've never failed me and always I have recovered you. I had you from my father and he from a... from a vold.
If ever you came from the forge of the true king under the mountain, go now and speed well. Yes. You love this character, Alex. He's just a dude.
It's like... It's just a hero. I couldn't respect it. Let me get it.
He's like Dale or something like that. He's like Ryan. Oh, you're so quiet. Ryan.
I think it's not for the beam, right? It does. And he's from the city next to Dale. Yes.
His name is like... Bard. Bard. That means...
Barric. Like, does it like... Busser. This is Bard.
He is the true king of Dale and lives in hiding in Lake Town with his family. We can talk about him quite quickly. He is a master archer and depending which version of the books or movies you go off of, he's either a bargeman who's just trying to lay low in the town of Lake Town or he's an expert archer and captain of town guard, depending which version we go off. We're going to stick primarily to the books I think for this character because it's a little bit easier and can make him sound like a bit more of a chad.
And that is that he is a well respected, well renowned captain of the town guard and specifically the archers of the guard of Lake Town and leads the defence in the attack of Smaug, the great dragon of the north when he comes down and burns Lake Town. And this gives us the single greatest achievement of Bard's life and that is firing the single arrow that would kill Smaug at last and topple the great dragon from the air. I mean, for Peaks it's pretty fucking good. Not me if you wouldn't say they've got to kill a fucking dragon.
Especially like a last dragon. Yeah. It's like, there's only one other guy I can say, like, and I can say George. I think it's the only guy I can say is the only guy I can name that killed the last dragon.
Well, one of the last dragons. The last or wake dragon kind of. Okay. So this belief there's other dragons than all three dragons.
I don't need to know that there's sleeping dragons in the north. I don't need to know that I'm right. Yeah. Yeah.
There's always something else out there. But yeah, that's Bard. He is a king in hiding a proud, he's a good leader. Who is the king in hiding around these parts?
Well, he's the only king in hiding in this list. Follow these and I didn't include Arigwa's boss. But he's incredibly skilled with the bow. He shouldn't be that skilled hand-to-hand fighting, despite what the movies make you think, where they just kind of made him a generic key man.
And he is a good leader, can definitely lead a group of men and kill the last rain. That's pretty much how epic he gets. No, it's my conspiracy theory. It's, Jet Field Company and Storbenes Black Arrows can't one shot for others.
No, because Gary had to knock off one of one of Smaug's scales. But the Black Arrow to then peers he's hired and actually new damage to Smaug. It's like conspiracy theory. I got a couple of questions.
It's a couple of questions. One, the Black Arrow. What the fuck is the Black Arrow? Is it like, I'm serious.
So here's the thing. Why is it going to be the Black Arrow? We're going to go back to the books. The way it works in the books is that there was no missing scale conspiracy theory that the movie's introduced.
It was Smaug laid in all of his Golden Gems so much that they were embedded into his scales and his whole body had been turned into armor with all of these Gems and gold. When the archers are shooting at Smaug and all of their arrows are bouncing off, a bird comes down, which leads me to one of the other powers I would give to Bard because it's in the books. He seems to be able to communicate with the birds. It's said, Wilson!
It's found birds. He speaks to the thrushes that you see the dwarves communicate with in the North, around Erebor and the Iron Hills and stuff. The bird whispers to him that there is a single point under Smaug's armpit where there is no gold covering him and that is the weak point. He finds this simple arrow and hits that point.
In the movies, however, they turned it into these massive iron forged dwarven steel ballista shots that way back when Snaug first attacked. Bard's ancestor was shooting these ballista shots at Smaug and one of these shots manages to dislodge a scale. Which, as much as I hate to say, does feel like it makes a little bit more sense than his body's covered in jewels. It also makes a lot of sense why we're shooting a single normal arrow to the armpitable places.
Killer dragon dragon. It's called the Dwarven arrow. It's not like the Dwarven arrow. It's like the one.
Oh, because it's a Dwarven arrow. It's going to kill a dragon. They're not really arrow people. I feel like they're going to make wonders.
It's pretty good. Yeah. What does the Dwarven arrow do? He's got Insta-Kill on it.
