David continues in Mark’s gospel with a familiar passage: Jesus is asleep in the boat; a storm blows up; the panicky disciples wake Jesus with “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”; Jesus silences the wind and asks why they’re still so timid; and the disciples become even more afraid, asking, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?” Written originally to the beleaguered Christians in Nero’s Rome, this story enfolds all of us as terrifying life-events overtake us; and it makes space for our “Where is God right now?” questions when the chaos overwhelms us.
