Los primeros árboles

En la década de 1920, la ciudad de Nueva York, necesitada de agua, planificó la construcción de una presa en Gilboa. La población tuvo que ser trasladada, y el Museo Estatal de Nueva York llevó a cabo una búsqueda exhaustiva que sacó a la luz unos cincuenta tocones fósiles de hasta dos metros de diámetro. Hace 385 millones de años, allí crecía el bosque del que formaban parte los fósiles de Gilboa, el más antiguo que conocemos. En 2005, un grupo internacional de paleontólogos del Museo Estatal de Nueva York y las universidades de Binghamton (Nueva York) y Cardiff, en el Reino Unido, encontró un ejemplar intacto, completo, de árbol petrificado en las proximidades del yacimiento original, que por primera vez conservaba, además del tocón del tronco, la copa.
