Lost Cannon Found After 250 Years | Montpelier News
from Montpelier News Today | 2 Min New | The Daily News Now!
After 250 years at the bottom of Lake Champlain, the final piece of a Revolutionary War cannon from the 1776 Battle of Valcour Island has been recovered — a dramatic find that closes a 25-year search. Using advanced remote sensing, researchers from Texas A&M located the fragment buried under four feet of mud, exactly where the blast would have sent it. Remarkably preserved by the lake’s cold, dark waters and clay, the piece matched a 3D model from a fragment found decades earlier. Now, it’ll undergo conservation and be reunited with other cannon parts at the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum — bringing a scattered piece of history back together for all to see.
