Lost in the Woods - NL

from Pastor Jonathan’s Sermons Hosted by jonathan althoff

Connect with me here in text… tell me where you are listening. Lost doesn’t always look like a crisis. Sometimes it looks like “I’m fine” on the outside while you’re quietly circling the same fears, the same regrets, the same patterns on the inside. We open with John 10:27 and a blunt question: if Jesus says His sheep hear His voice and follow, why do we still feel spiritually lost, emotionally exhausted, or unsure about the next step? We dig into how people actually lose their way. It is usually gradual, built from small compromises, distractions, and voices that sound sensible in the moment. Fear has a voice. Comfort has a voice. Success, failure, bitterness, culture, your past, and even your own understanding all compete to shape your decisions. The real issue underneath decision making is often a trust problem: which voice do you rely on enough to follow faithfully, and is it forming the person you want to become? One of the most memorable moments comes from a seminary season marked by depression and doubt, when a quiet walk leads to a clearing full of sheep that seem trapped by thick woods. Then a shepherd appears through a narrow hidden opening, calls the sheep by name, and they walk out single file. Nothing about the woods magically disappears, but everything changes when the shepherd comes into view. We connect that picture to Proverbs 3:5-6 and Psalm 23: God does not promise we will never enter valleys, but He does promise we will not walk them alone. If you feel stuck in grief, shame, addiction, loneliness, or confusion, press play and take one honest step with us: name the voice you have been trusting and ask God to help you trust His voice more.
