Lost Someone to Their Politics? The Politics Was the Permission (Ep 494).

The friend you stopped calling, the relative you filed under enemy, you'd say you lost them to their politics. This episode asks a harder question: would you still go to their funeral? If yes, they aren't lost, and the word is hiding something. It takes no side and names no positions. It's about the shape of the rupture and what that shape gives away.Going underneath both the civility scripts and the "estrangement is overprescribed" take, it makes an uncomfortable claim: in many of these endings the politics isn't the cause, it's the permission. The bond was already thin, already a duty you couldn't put down, and politics handed you a blameless, righteous exit no one could fault you for. The reckoning being dodged: "I've wanted distance from this person for years and never had a reason holy enough to take it." The work is to separate two fused questions, do I object to their politics, and do I want this person in my life, because answering them together lets you skip the second.
