Louise Coyle: Managing the Anxiety That Lives Alongside a Serious Health Diagnosis

from The Soulful Catalyst Podcast · host Joanna Ingram

What if the hardest part of a serious health diagnosis isn't the diagnosis itself, but the waiting, the uncertainty, and the overwhelming anxiety in between? In this episode of The Soulful Catalyst, I'm joined by Louise Coyle, Hypnotherapist and EFT Practitioner, and founder of Changing Times Hypnotherapy. Louise helps people manage stress and anxiety differently, giving them tools to feel calmer, challenge unhelpful thinking, and find their footing when the ground has shifted beneath them. Louise came to this work through lived experience. Her daughter has faced cancer twice, and Louise spent years in hospital waiting rooms, on the end of phone appointments that turned out to carry news she wasn't emotionally prepared for, and watching other patients and families visibly drowning in anxiety without access to anything that could help. She was using her own tools to stay grounded through all of it, and that's the moment her focus sharpened. She now works specifically with people going through a cancer diagnosis or serious health condition, and increasingly with their families too, who so often become invisible in that process while carrying their own enormous weight. What I found so compelling about this conversation is how clearly Louise understands both the clinical environment and the emotional reality of sitting inside it. The NHS is designed to inform, not to calm. Every consultation is legally required to outline what could go wrong. That's the system, and it's nobody's fault. But for a brain already in threat mode, it can send anxiety spiralling in ways that nobody in that building has time to address. In this episode we explore: ➤ How EFT tapping and hypnotherapy work as a combined toolkit, with tapping as the immediate first aid when anxiety is spiking and hypnotherapy for the longer-term shift in thinking and imagination ➤ Why "just be positive" is one of the least helpful things you can say to someone facing a health crisis, and what a genuinely useful alternative actually looks like ➤ The hidden toll on families and carers, and why supporting the people around a diagnosis matters as much as supporting the person living through it ➤ Louise's Tension Release Breathing technique, and why learning one reliable way to relax is more powerful than trying everything at once ➤ The myth about hypnosis, and why the reality, which is about directing your own imagination rather than surrendering control of your mind, makes it one of the most accessible tools available This episode is for anyone going through a cancer diagnosis, supporting someone who is, or simply recognising that anxiety has been running the show for too long without any tools to change it.
