In which D’Artagnan, feeling neglected amidst the gaieties and intrigues of Fontainebleau, seeks solace from his friend Planchet and contemplates the ennui that settles upon a life of intermittent service and restless thought. Together they devise a plan to break the dull routine, setting their sights on a place half-town, half-country, where new amusements might yet be found and old mysteries pondered.
