Lovanium 1925: Congo's First University and the Colonial Mind

In 1925, the first stone of Lovanium University was laid in a hillside near Leopoldville. Conceived by Belgian Catholics as a civilising mission, it became an unlikely forge for Congo's future elite — and its most vocal critics.
