I'm Carrie Dan. Today is, it is a bad day to peek at your 401k if you have one, and a bad day to start feeling those seasonal allergies, just to make all of your co-workers glare at you suspiciously all day. Seriously, everyone, please wash your hands, stay home if you're sick. It certainly feels like we're at a very serious point in the coronavirus story.

Markets are unstable and they plunged today. At least two members of Congress, as of this recording, are self-quarantining because of fears they were exposed to the virus. And there's increasing talk of needing legislative action to prevent a long-term economic downturn. In other words, it feels awfully close to a real crisis.

And that could be the kind of crisis that could upend much of what we thought about the political landscape in 2020. For one, we've consistently looked at the general election through the lens of the record-breaking economy. Basically, an incumbent president dealing with a robust economy pretty much is always going to have some kind of cushion, right? But now there's reason for uncertainty about how good the economy is going to look later this year.

Second, it's come to be taken as gospel that while President Trump seems to have a hard ceiling when it comes to his approval rating, he's also seemed to have a floor. That is, his supporters are so loyal that things that might have rattled his favorability just tend to not do that. Puerto Rico, Iran, North Korea, the Mueller report, impeachment. The president's approval rating has been remarkably stable through all of that.

But with those situations, President Trump could normally kind of wait them out or attack the messenger or try to tweet his way out of it. But coronavirus just feels different. So will it affect his approval rating at some point or not? And then there are consequences for the Democratic primary.

Now, there is a lot going on in that contest in the last few weeks. We're suddenly looking at a two-man showdown between Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders. And no single factor should be pinpointed as either a cause of or an effect of the state of the race. But it is worth noting that Democratic voters are being asked to pick a horse in what suddenly looks like a very uncertain time for the country.

With the possibility of a recession looming, fear about managing coronavirus, and worry that the current administration is dropping the ball. The person who has long since run as the stability and the electability candidate may be better positioned at this time. A new CNN poll out today shows that Democrats rank Joe Biden as much, much more trusted to handle, quote, a major crisis. 65% of Democrats pick Biden in that poll on that question compared to just 23% who pick Bernie Sanders.

The same poll finds, as we have seen consistently, Democrats also believe that Biden is far more likely to beat Trump in November. And slash but, and this is worth keeping in mind in the long run, there's another long-term issue that's really likely to be elevated here, which is about health care. Many Americans are worried they can't take off work or they don't have an affordable doctor to go to. And this thing may very well highlight all of the problems with the current health care system.

And maybe that underscores for some voters Bernie Sanders' messaging about how the health care system really does have to be completely overhauled because it's just not working for many folks out there. None of all of this is to imply that a crisis is good or bad for anyone. Crisis is a crisis is a crisis. And we're at a very scary time for everyone.

But as voters pick their candidates, it would be foolish to ignore that we're about to go through a period of a lot of uncertainty and fear. And with that, yes, please wash your hands.
