Embracing Change: Reflections on Moving and Community Dynamics Greetings and grace be unto all of you with love, joy, peace, prosperity, and longevity from God our Father and from our Lord Jesus Christ. In today's blog post, I want to share my reflections on our journey of moving and the dynamics of community that we've experienced along the way. Through my experiences, I hope to provide insights that resonate with those who may feel a similar sense of displacement or community struggle. The Journey of Moving: Why We're Leaving After living in our current home for nearly a decade, we have decided to put it on the market. Many ask us why we are leaving such a lovely area with a pool in the back. The truth is, while the house has been a good home, various factors are prompting us to seek a new beginning. We aim to sell the house ourselves, avoiding middlemen. It's about taking control of our journey. The Challenges of a New Environment When we first arrived in North Carolina, it was a cultural shift. The landscape was dotted with farmland, and I was taken aback by the sight of a man riding a mower with a pistol at his side. It was unfamiliar and a bit intimidating. The neighbors had dogs that barked incessantly, creating an atmosphere that felt less than welcoming. Reflecting on these dynamics, I recall my time in prison, where freedom of movement was non-existent. Now, in this new community, I find myself hesitant to take walks, not only because of the barking dogs but also due to an underlying paranoia about how I might be perceived based on my appearance. Community and Connection: The Reality of Living in Rural Areas Living in a community with a population of about a thousand people, mostly veterans, has its unique challenges. The quietness can be refreshing but also isolating. I've noticed changes in the social climate since we arrived in December 2017. It's important to recognize that people are people, regardless of their backgrounds. Despite the challenges, I feel a sense of gratitude for the peace and the opportunity to spend quality time with my loved ones. However, the fear of being judged or misunderstood still lingers. I often think about the freedom I had when I lived in urban areas compared to now. The Influence of Hate in Society One of the most troubling observations I've made is how hate manifests in communities. It's a mindset that can spread like wildfire, similar to the way it operated in prison. If one person doesn't like you, they can rally others to join in their disdain. It's disheartening to see this mentality persist in society. People often come together to hate rather than to love and uplift one another. The truth is, hate is a powerful force that can bond people, but it is ultimately destructive. Instead, we should strive to spread love, understanding, and compassion. There's a choice to be made: do we want to live in a world filled with hate, or do we want to cultivate love? Finding Freedom in Love In my reflections, I've found that love is the antidote to the hate that surrounds us. It's about choosing to uplift those around us instead of tearing them down. I think about the wisdom of my partner, Tamika, who often reminds me of the importance of love over hate. We should strive to make choices that promote kindness and understanding. In moments of despair, I remind myself of the powerful impact of love. It allows us to connect, to empathize, and to build strong communities. We must recognize that regardless of our backgrounds or experiences, we all share a common humanity. ## Conclusion: A Call to Action As we prepare for our move and the changes ahead, I invite you to reflect on your own communities. How can you contribute to creating a more loving and understanding environment? Remember, every small act of kindness counts. Let's strive to choose love over hate and recognize the common bonds that unite us all. I plan to continue sharing these reflections and insights, aiming to inspire change and encourage discourse around love and community. Thank you for tuning in to my thoughts today. If you resonate with my reflections or have similar experiences, I would love to hear from you. Let's engage in this journey together—spread love and positivity wherever you go. #love #hate #racism
