To have special powers would make us feel special, important, and needed to the world. The Corinthian church had a similar perspective when it came to the spiritual gifts found in 1 Corinthians 12. These gifts were considered badges of honor and superiority within the church. Paul combats this view in chapter 13 by grounding them in the truth that there is a more excellent way. Love should be the real reason why we earnestly desire the gifts. They’re given for the benefit of others; not for our own. Love gives the spiritual gifts true meaning!
