The author argues that the exegesis of St. Augustine, while valuable, does not necessarily support a non-literal interpretation of Genesis, as many have claimed. Specifically, the author contends that St. Augustine's understanding of the six days of creation was based on his belief in a simultaneous creation, a belief the author argues was grounded in a misunderstanding of the biblical text. The author ultimately concludes that the literal interpretation of Genesis is not at odds with reason and that the Church Fathers, including St. Augustine, would have agreed with this interpretation.
