Low-Cost Refreshable Braille Part One

In this series of Tech Doctor podcasts, Robert Carter sits down with Lisa Salinger to explore the new and exciting world of low-cost refreshable Braille technology. In this podcast, Lisa and Robert explain how electronic Braille technology remained static for nearly 40 years. Within the last few years, however, some new and less expensive technology designed to display electronic Braille has been developed. Robert and Lisa express their excitement with how the cost of refreshable Braille is coming down. This means that electronic Braille is available to more people than ever before. Lisa and Robert will begin examining three specific low-cost Braille displays in part two, three and four of this series. Robert and Lisa explain that the company that Lisa works for called Mystic Access Has developed audio tutorials on the three Braille displays that we will be discussing. These tutorials are an excellent way to learn about these devices. Lisa and Robert highlight the idea that it is critical that each person figures out through hands on experience, studying the user manuals or listening to these tutorials which Braille display will best meet their needs. Having so many choices is wonderful but each person should think critically about what they really need and want in a Braille display.
