Luiz Gama (1830-1882) foi um importante líder abolicionista, jornalista e poeta brasileiro. É o patrono da cadeira n.º 15 da Academia Paulista de Letras. Luiz Gonzaga Pinto da Gama nasceu em Salvador, Bahia, no dia 21 de junho de 1830. Filho de um fidalgo de origem portuguesa (cujo nome jamais citou) e da escrava livre Luiza Mahin que, segundo ele, participou da revolta do Malês em 1835 e da Sabinada em 1837 e, como consequência teve que fugir para o Rio de Janeiro, deixando o filho aos cuidados do pai. Em 1840, com 10 anos, Luiz Gama foi levado, por seu pai, para o Rio de Janeiro e vendido ao negociante e alferes Antônio Pereira Cardoso, para pagar uma dívida de jogo. Com 17 anos, Luiz Gama conheceu o estudante Antônio Rodrigues do Prado, hóspede da fazenda de seu pai, que lhe ensinou a ler e escrever.
