Lutnick’s Demands Shatter Trade Talks | Calgary News

Trade talks between Canada and the U.S. collapsed in dramatic fashion, with Prime Minister Mark Carney blaming irreconcilable differences—but insiders point to a single American negotiator, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, whose last-minute demands—like dictating Canada’s trade partners—forced Ottawa’s hand. His unpredictable, emotionally charged approach may have shattered what was already fragile diplomacy, revealing deep fractures within the Trump administration—and raising questions about who really holds the reins of U.S. trade policy.
